Gas Works Park Renovations – Playground, Comfort Station and East Entry
Updated: July 28, 2023
Summer 2023
Comfort Station and East Entry
In early July, WS Contractor, LLC opened a major portion of the East Entry renovation project. The restroom building remains closed and is getting replaced. Porta-potties are in place for park visitors. The area around the Gas Works Park trestles located in the eastern side of the park and near the Play/Picnic Barns, will be seeded and irrigated beginning late August 2023 and be protected by fencing thru the fall of 2023 (to allow the new grass to establish). WS Contractor and Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is working with the contractor to minimize the construction impact to park visitors and requests visitors’ cooperation in following detours and closures at the park. We anticipate opening the new restroom facility in late 2023.
The existing comfort station/restroom facility will be replaced with a new accessible all gender facility that meets Americans with Disability (ADA) standards and Life Safety Code Compliant Structure Goals and will be situated in a new location offering increased site lines and safety. SPR will provide porty-potties for the public during constructions.
Additionally, the project will make extensive ADA improvements to the east entrance of the park, create a food truck location in the park, install a new plaza, new seating wall and ADA parking stalls.
Gas Works Park Overall Site Plan and Renderings
The Landmarks Preservation Board unanimously approved the project March 3, 2021 and project received its Demolition Permit but still awaits its Construction Permit.

Play Area - Thank you, Seattle! This project is complete.
Wyser Construction replaced the decayed smoke arrestor in the middle of the play area in January 2018. The smoke arrestor cap was an original piece from the Gas Works plant that was repurposed in the 1970's original play area design. The replica cap was fabricated off site and requires a crane to assist in the installation. This was one of the final items for the play area renovation project.
A new remediation/injection/monitoring well system has been installed under the play area. The Play Area project was awarded to Wyser Construction.
