Salmon Bay Park Play Area Renovation
Updated: September 29, 2023
Fall 2023
The project team is working toward completion of 90% construction documentation. The Woodland Explorer proposal selected during community outreach is the basis for the new play equipment and layout. New equipment will include structures for ages 2-5 and ages 5-12 with multiple slides, a large net climber, multiple balance and climbing elements, nature play themed play panels, log hops, tot, belt and adaptive swings, several bridges and platforms, and a climbable whirl. The existing zip line will remain. The project team is coordinating with SDOT to install additional bike parking that serves the play area.
Construction documentation will continue in 2023 with the goal of starting construction in early 2024.
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) presented three play equipment options and a preferred site plan design during our 3rd round of community engagement events. We received 340 community responses from our online survey and in-person Open House at the park. Thank you for your time and valuable input! Follow the links below for a summary of what we heard.

Project Description
The goal of this project is to renovate the existing play area space, including new play equipment, ADA improvements, benches, and seating options. Renovated elements will meet current safety and accessibility standards.
Some of the elements we hope to improve are: replacing the play area equipment, including the whirl, spring toys, and the swings (the recently replaced zipline will be retained); replacing the play area safety surfacing; adding accessible picnic tables, benches, and other site furnishings; improving ADA accessibility to the play area and the adjacent portion of the park; and consideration of trees to begin the park's next generation of these green assets.
