Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project
December 5, 2023
What’s happening now?
The Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project is nearing final design!
Thank you to everyone who joined us on November 30 to hear about project updates. We highlighted what's new in the design, shared about the outreach we've been doing with the SODO BIA, and hosted a live Q&A.
Couldn't make it?

Here's what's new:
We're making some big changes to the design to better support our local community and businesses. We're collaborating with the SODO Business Improvement Area (BIA) to engage with businesses that will be affected by these changes. Business owners and bike advocates are excited about the changes we made to the design!
- In partnership with the SODO BIA and local businesses, we moved the SODO Trail connection from S Forest St to S Lander St. The new S Lander St connection will include:
- Extending the one-way bike lanes on both sides of 6th Ave S to S Lander St
- Adding two-way protected bike lanes on the north side of S Lander St between 6th Ave S and SODO Trail
- Building a bike ramp to transition to the SODO Trail at SODO Station
- In coordination with King County, we started designing the northern connection to downtown. We're waiting on King County's permit to move forward with design of this segment, but our current plans include:
- Upgrading existing bike lanes and add segments of new protected bike lanes where they are missing on Seattle Blvd S and the short block of 6th Ave S between Seattle Blvd S and S Dearborn St
- Building a new pathway through the closed block of 6th Ave S
- Adding wayfinding signage to the SODO Trail
- We swapped a segment of one-way protected bike lanes with two-way protected bike lanes to preserve existing street trees and two-way freight movement on 6th Ave S. In addition to the Airport Way S segment, there will be two-way protected bike lanes at the following locations:
- South side of S Alaska St between Aiport Way S and 6th Ave S
- East side of 6th Ave S between S Snoqualmie St and S Nevada St

Project Description
As part of Seattle’s Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) we are building a new protected bike lane connecting Georgetown to Downtown.
The new connection will be the final link in a system of north-south bike trails between Seattle and South King County. This bike system includes the Green River Trail and the South Park to Georgetown Trail. These changes will also make the light rail network more accessible for communities in Georgetown and South Park.
Project Goals
- Enhance safety for all roadway users
- Improve access and travel options from downtown Seattle to Georgetown and South Park
- Keep as much parking as possible along the corridor
- Provide a safe bicycle connection between Georgetown, South Park, SODO, and Downtown
