Rainier Ave S and S Jackson St. Safety Enhancements
Updated: April 18, 2024
This project is complete!
The Rainier Ave S and S Jackson St. Safety Enhancements project was completed in April, 2024.
What’s happening now?
We are happy to share the completion of our Rainier Ave S and S Jackson St. Safety Enhancements project. Crews finished installing a protected left turn phase and other signal improvements.
The protected left-turn phase allows westbound turning vehicles to make a left turn at this intersection without conflicting with oncoming eastbound traffic. During this phase, indicated by a green left-turn arrow on the traffic signal, vehicles in the turning lane have the right-of-way while oncoming traffic is stopped by a red light. This improves the safety of left-turning vehicles by preventing collisions with vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

Project Overview
The intersection of Rainier Ave S and S Jackson St. is a busy intersection located in the Jackson Place and Little Saigon neighborhoods. During peak periods, long queues develop westbound on S Jackson St. for left-turning vehicles to access southbound Rainier Ave S.
The westbound left turn movement is currently permissive and turning vehicles must negotiate with oncoming traffic.
The project will add a protected left turn phase and other signal improvements. Additional signs and markings may be considered during design to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection.

Project Background
This is one of nine Neighborhood Street Fund projects requested by community and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
